Frequently Asked Questions: General

Can I really learn to play online?
Absolutely. Nowadays, it has become very simple to make connections with people in real time regardless of where they are. I use the same methods and materials as with my in-person studio students. Tutorial videos and printables provide a great foundation for anyone to learn piano on their own. When combined with live sessions, you can have a customized and accelerated learning experience.
I tried piano lessons when I was young and didn't learn much. How is this different?
You probably learned from a book and teacher. You worked on a piece with your teacher, then went home to practice for the rest of the week but forgot what it sounded like, so you practiced wrong notes and rhythm. After a week of that, you had lots of relearning to do. It's easy to give up when you making slow progress.

I urge my students to use the Piano Marvel learning system. It requires an inexpensive connection between your electronic keyboard and your computer, but it's well worth it, because you can learn 4-8 faster than with any printed book. And you learn it correctly the first time.
Why Study Piano?
The piano is a great first instrument as it is able to sound multiple pitches simultaneously. This helps students to learn harmony, chord construction, finger dexterity and music reading. It can give everyone a great head start on other instruments. Also, learning music on any instrument keeps adult minds sharp and helps younger minds to excel at many different academic subjects.
I've always wanted to learn to play the piano but I'm in my 60s. Can I still learn piano?
Absolutely. Several studies have been done that conclude that learning a musical instrument is something that can keep adult brains more active than many other activities (including crossword puzzles). It can provide a creative outlet and a fulfilling hobby. I've had many 60 and 70+ students that have enjoyed bringing music into their lives

Frequently Asked Questions: Piano Marvel

What makes Piano Marvel so great?
There are many reasons, some of which are mentioned on the How it Works page. Some of the main benefits are:
  • The music is on your screen and the student sees the music notation in action.
  • Piano Marvel monitors the student's playing and gives immediate feedback, showing correct and incorrect notes and rhythm.
  • Since it gives you an accuracy score each time you play a piece, students get a game-like quality that increases their motivation to keep practicing until they get a good score. I require 98% accuracy before they can consider the piece 'finished.'
  • For a nominal subscription price, you get several hundred method and technique pieces in six levels, plus several thousand additional pop, rock, new age, sacred, and classical pieces in the Library section.
  • As a teacher, I want to make each lesson as efficient as possible. After trying many things that work okay, I've still found nothing that is as beneficial for the time spent as Piano Marvel.
Can I Use Piano Marvel with a non-electronic piano?
Absolutely. Though PM is made to connect your computer or iPad to an electronic keyboard through what's called a MIDI connection, it can be used with any piano. The difference is that PM is not able to 'listen' to your playing so no grades will be given. It can still keep track of your practice time and what pieces you're working on.

I've had some students who purchase an inexpensive keyboard (as low as $85) to practice with Piano Marvel and practice on their acoustic piano after learning each piece.
Do you teach with any other methods?
Yes, I do teach with other methods. I highly recommend PM as it does make learning so much faster for any student.
Why is Piano Marvel Subscription-based?
That would be a question for the company, but using this app for many years, I can say that they have improved it substantially every year. Taking into account all the features it has, it really is a bargain for the price.
What devices does Piano Marvel work on?
Piano Marvel works on any Mac or Windows computer, and iPads. The Android version should be out sometime in 2021.
What kind of connection do I need For my computer/device?
Older electronic keyboards have the older MIDI connection (with both in/out jacks). These need a MIDI to USB connecting cable ($10-30). All newer ones need only a regular USB connection to your computer.
For iPads, you will also need a 'camera connector' ($30-35) along with a regular USB cable.
Can I get a demo without obligation?
Of course. I'll be glad to do a demo for all existing and potential students. You don't need to subscribe to Piano Marvel for the demo. Also, you can subscribe and get a 30-day free trial and try it out on your own. You can cancel at any time.
