Learn to Play the Recorder

"The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and we, the musicians, are the messengers."  - Roy Ayers
Children, teens, adults. Learn to play an easy instrument, bring music into your life, and have fun at the same time.

Learn:
  • How to care for your recorder
  • How to read music
  • Correct recorder technique
  • Play simple but beautiful tunes
Enjoy duets with your friends or join a recorder group. Obviously, you need a recorder (I advise starting with either soprano or alto), book, and music stand (I can order for you - see below).

About the Recorder

Picture
Many people think the recorder is a kids-only instrument because it's inexpensive and easy to learn but it actually has a long and rich history.

Recorders come in different sizes that basically correspond to the vocal ranges: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. They are traditionally constructed from wood, although the use of plastics is now common.

The recorder is first documented in the Middle Ages and became more popular in the renaissance and baroque periods. King Henry VIII helped its popularity having, over 300 recorders made for him and even composing music for them. It was revived in the 20th century as part of the historically-informed performance movement. Today, there are many professional recorder players and a large community of amateurs.

The sound of the recorder is often described as clear and sweet, and has historically been associated with birds and shepherds. See below for some beautiful examples of recorder music.

"As a piano teacher myself, I was anxious to find a teacher that would make learning music an enjoyable experience for my children. I am totally and completely happy with my children's lessons with Terry. He is patient and encouraging. He draws from a variety of resources to provide music that teaches, challenges, and is pleasant to play (and listen to). I highly recommend him!"  - Anna H.
